Sashiko, meaning 'little stabs', is a traditional Japanese stitching technique, used to mend and reinforce worn-out garments. In this visible mending workshop, you'll learn the basics of this traditional Japanese method of repairing and get the chance to mend one of your own pieces of clothing.
Sashiko is all about embracing the art of repair. It encourages us to make visible mends and wear them with pride! While traditionally done in indigo and white, we will use colourful threads and patches to make your pieces stand out. Bring an item in need of mending, all other materials will be provided.
Sashiko mending is best for holes and tears in woven fabrics and perfect for denim!
This workshop is a collaboration between Rethrindle CIC and Rebel Patch, two small slow fashion organisations, aiming to make sewing inclusive and accessible to everyone. This is why we try to make our workshops as affordable as possible. A limited number of concession spaces is available for each of our workshops. If you're looking to book a concession space but they're sold out, please contact us and we'll see what we can do. If you can, please consider getting a pay-it-forward ticket - every pay-it-forward ticket purchased enables us to offer another concession space for someone who needs it.
