the spaces between
amber bardell
‘The Spaces between collection’ is a photographic patch collection that is very much rooted in surrealism, especially in how it’s portrayed the female body. Drawing inspiration from Bill Brandt’s nudes on the beach, one of the patches called ‘Mouchette’ explores the intersection of abstraction and the corporeal. The body becomes an abstract shape, closer to sculpture, challenging the viewer's perception in a surreal setting.
Another design in this collection is called ‘Nude’. With a self-built pinhole camera and the unpredictable nature of 35mm film, ‘Nude’ transcends the ordinary, inviting the viewer’s mind to wander beyond the scene captured. At first glance, the image on this patch may appear as a female nude, but it's a testament to the concept of Psychic Automatism.
Psychic Automatism is a creative process where the artist lets their mind flow freely without conscious control, allowing thoughts, images, and ideas come out in an unfiltered way. In this case, the image is caught between reality and imagination, showing things that were not actually there.
